FIIA Comment: The ceasefire in Ukraine will hardly lead to a sustainable peace

Publication release 9 September 2014:

WITH THE CEASEFIRE, THE WEST HAS A CHANCE TO STEP UP ITS INVOLVEMENT IN UKRAINE

The ceasefire in Donbass does not herald stability and a sustainable resolution to the crisis in Ukraine.
First, Moscow’s geopolitical objectives have not been met, and there is a colossal gap between the expectations of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics and the promises made to them. In turn, Kyiv cannot accept a frozen conflict, treating the rebel-controlled territories as Ukraine’s Transnistria. In these circumstances, the West should step up its involvement in Ukraine.

The latest FIIA Comment takes a look at the ceasefire in Ukraine. The author, Arkady Moshes, works as the Programme Director in The EU's Eastern Neighbourhood and Russia research programme at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs.
